STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES

Council is aware that Student support services (SSS) are a cluster of facilities and activities that are provided to make the learning process easier and more interesting for the learner. They serve as the interface between the institution and the learners. The quality of higher education depends directly on the student support services provided in various modes of Vocational education.
We wish to let you know that to assist you with any problems you may face, including those of an academic or personal nature we have student advisers who are very understanding of the issues you face as a student and they can really provide help when you need it most.

Student support services were crucial to helping students enrol, persist, and complete. A number of NCVTC grantees implemented new procedures and policies delivered by new support staff, often known as navigators, success coaches, or career coaches. Navigators and coaches offered students services such as academic guidance and advising, academic support, career coaching, job placement and supplemental services. During this process, grantees developed navigator toolkits, student support strategies, and even an online course to help to scale the innovation

Authorization Training Institution can be an exciting time, yet many students are apprehensive about the challenges and competition that await them upon joining Authorization Training Institution. • Anti-ragging cell
  • Student grievance redressal cell
  • Career counselling services: To help students to identify career options suitable to their talents

STUDY SKILLS UNIT

This service gives students advice on everything academic, from tips for taking notes during lectures and researching effectively to referencing correctly and producing high-quality assignments. We have specialist staff that can assist you.

PEER SUPPORT AND TUTORING PROGRAMS

Adjusting to student life isn’t always easy, so it’s worth looking out for peer support and mentoring programs at our Council. We run peer-assisted study sessions, which are designed for students who want to improve their academic performance and are run by students who have previously studied the relevant unit.

DISABILITY LIAISON OFFICE

Students with disability can access support services such as India Regional languages interpreters, note takers, specialised computer programs and other equipment. The disability service can also act as liaison between staff and students to discuss a student’s requirements and arrange alterations to assessments, such as using a scribe or computer in an exam.

COUNSELLING

Trained counsellors can give confidential advice to students struggling with their studies, relationships or problems at home. You can also make an appointment to have a chat if you are having trouble adjusting to the changes that come with beginning tertiary study (such as being away from home or keeping up with an independent study schedule). This service is available without a doctor’s referral.

CAREERS SERVICE

Careers offices provide counselling and guidance to students who are unsure of what field they want to enter after Skill and Vocational Education and need some guidance choosing subjects, as well as final-year students looking for their first job. They may also provide advice and assistance to students seeking part-time work or work experience during their course. Most institutions offer a combination of group workshops (such as those for résumé writing and interview skills) and one-on-one sessions.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

The financial services team at your institution can be seen when you need advice about budgeting, employment rights, taxation, government allowances and other financial questions or problems. Financial advisers can also assist students to obtain student loans, whether this is through the institution or a bank.

ACCOMMODATION SERVICE

Housing service staff usually gives information about on- and off-campus accommodation options for students and maintains a database or notice board of available rooms and properties. They may also be able to advise you about your rights as a tenant and provide assistance should you require help with a rental dispute.

STUDENT HEALTH CLINIC

On-campus nurses can provide first-aid treatment and information and referrals on general medical and family planning matters. Students may also be able to make an appointment with a bulk-billing doctor or access dental services at a reduced cost.

LIBRARIES AND COMPUTER LABS

Access to a well-stocked library makes it a lot easier to complete your assignments and get some quiet study done between classes. Some institutions also house faculty-specific libraries (such as for business or law) or subject-specific libraries (such as for cinema studies). Most facilities also stock plenty of fiction, magazines and even DVDs, and most allow personal internet use. Staff are on hand to answer any questions or help you locate resources and run regular sessions to assist students to develop information research skills. These generally occur at the beginning of each semester.

COMPUTER LABS

Computer labs are a must for completing assignments and research between your classes. You institution may even offer secure 24-hour computer labs for those night owls up late finishing assignments. You may also find that there are special computer labs set aside for certain students who require specific software (design students, for instance).

SPORTING FACILITIES

The great thing about being a student is that not everything is about sitting in a lecture or at a desk studying, with cheap gym memberships and sporting clubs keeping students moving between classes. We have sprawling playing fields that you can use at your leisure or as a member of a sporting club.

CAREER COUNSELLING

Attending career counselling workshops at your Council is the perfect way to explore your motivations and assets, the skills you could offer a business, and careers you would be a good match for. Career counselling is especially useful if you aren’t quite sure which direction to head in. It will help you discover new options and decide on a pathway. Your Council careers centre can also help you when applying for jobs, searching for internships or contacting alumni in your sector.

NETWORKING TRAINING AND EVENTS

STUDENT SUPPORT ORGANIZATION

Organising student support at an institutional level, perhaps as the responsibility of a unit or department, is key to the quality of support that a student receives.

This requires a holistic approach with student support planning based on previous analyses of students’ needs and demands, taking into account different learner groups and the specific characteristics of lifelong learners.

Institutional planning should integrate different types of resources, coordinating staff to give support in academic, technical, administrative, and other relevant areas.

Promotion of student success, satisfaction and retention should be the main objectives. Support services encompass all those aspects of the Council experience other than the specific teaching and learning elements of a course.

This covers administrative, technical and pastoral aspects, and includes induction, course choice and careers advice.

Some generic academic provision can also be considered under this heading, particularly library facilities and support for study skills such as digital literacy.

Teaching support is better considered as an aspect of Course Design even when a devolved model of teaching is used that uses tutors or mentors.
